Abstract

Religious practice and practice-oriented elements in non-confessional religious education in primary, secondary and university education is often absent. The non-confessional, secular religious education may also be aligned with secularist norms and values where religion is perceived as outdated and irrational. In this article, I address these two related and subject-specific aspects and propose a practice-based non-confessional religion education. However, such a practice-based education does not include all kinds of practices in every situation or context, nor does it indicate that religious practice is the only way to achieve the goals of religious education. In this study, I discuss materiality and religious practice in religious education and its importance for religious literacy and understanding of religion. This is done on the basis of concrete examples that I have used in the context of the teaching I conduct.
