Abstract

Assessment of pedagogical and scientific skills must be made with equal care in the case of appointments. This has been statutory in Sweden since the 1960s. The difficulty of making qualified assessments does not only apply to employment and promotion. The increasingly common systems for rewarding pedagogical skills at Swedish universities have further focused on the need for competent assessors. The need has been met, among other things, through a national course in expert review of pedagogical skills, which has been carried out as a collaboration between a number of Swedish higher education institutions. During three training rounds, between 2017 and 2020, the participants had to answer questions about perceived challenges in the expert assessments. The responses were analyzed with thematic content analysis that resulted in five themes, which are discussed in the article. The results provide a basis for the development of the higher education institutions' review processes, can provide support to experts and people who have to make decisions about employment, promotion or pedagogical merit, and also for those who work with compiling a pedagogical portfolio.
